rifAMPin Oral Suspension (LOW STRENGTH)   10 mg/mL

    Simple syrup       qs to  
Recipe Total Quantity:
Final Quantity Desired: mL

Directions: 1. Empty capsules carefully into a GLASS mortar and triturate to a fine powder.
2. Gradually levigate powder with simple syrup until a liquid is formed.
3. Pour into a graduated cylinder.
4. Rinse mortar and qs to final volume with simple syrup.
5. Transfer to final container and label.

Nahata MC, et al. Effect of preparation method and storage on rifampin concentration in suspensions. Annals of Pharmacotherapy 1994 (Feb); 28: 182-185.
Reported substantially lower rifampin concentration in suspensions prepared from capsules compared to a solution prepared from injection. Rifampin 1 mg/mL suspension prepared from injection found to retain at least 97% of the initial concentration for 56 days at 4C.

As in the previous study above, Nahata, et al recommended a stability of 56 days at 22C for rifampin 1 mg/mL suspension prepared from injection and 42 days at 22C for rifampin 1 mg/mL suspension prepared from capsules.
