Dexamethasone Sodium Phosphate Oral Solution in Normal Saline   1 mg/mL (Note Strength)

    dexamethasone sodium phosphate  10 mg/mL  VIAL  (preservative free vial) 
    sodium chloride (bacteriostatic)  0.9%  INJ   
Recipe Total Quantity:
Final Quantity Desired: mL

Directions: 1. Withdraw required amount of dexamethasone and transfer to a graduated cylinder.
2. QS to final volume with bacteriostatic sodium chloride 0.9%.
3. Mix well.
4. Transfer to final container and label.

Notes This recipe is preferred for neonates corrected age 28 days or less and patients on ketogenic diet.

Use preservative free (without benzyl alcohol) injectable dexamethasone to prepare recipe.

Can substitute dexamethasone sodium phosphate powder USP or dexamethasone tablets for injectable dexamethasone. An arbitrary expiration date of 14 days refrigerated can be assigned based on USP 795 guidelines.

References used Sandoz brand of dexamethasone 4 mg/mL injection with metabisulfite and propylparabens as preservatives, which is no longer available. Current Omega brand of dexamethasone 4 mg/mL injection contains benzyl alcohol as a preservative.
